GATE 2027 Registration Postponed; IIT Madras Announces Revised Application and Exam Schedule

📰 Exams 📅 15 Aug 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), the organising institute for GATE 2027, has revised the registration and examination schedule for the upcoming Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

Under the revised timeline, the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) will open on August 27, 2026. The regular application deadline has also been extended to September 27, while candidates applying with a late fee will have until October 5, 2026.

A significant change has also been made to the examination schedule. GATE 2027 will now be conducted across six days — February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027 — instead of the four days announced earlier.

The application rectification dates remain unchanged despite the revision to the registration and examination schedule.

Registration Deadline Extended

Candidates will now get additional time to complete their GATE applications.

The regular registration deadline, which was earlier September 21, has been moved to September 27, 2026.

Similarly, the extended registration deadline with a late fee has shifted from September 30 to October 5.

Students should still avoid waiting until the final day, particularly because the application requires academic information, documents, photographs and other candidate details.

GATE 2027 Exam Now Across Six Days

Another major change concerns the examination calendar.

Instead of being conducted over four days, GATE 2027 will now take place across six examination days:

February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027.

Candidates will receive their paper-specific examination date, session and other details according to the schedule released by the organising institute.

New Robotics and Automation Paper Introduced

GATE 2027 will feature 30 test papers, with candidates permitted to appear for either one paper or up to two papers from the combinations allowed by the organising institute.

A major addition this year is the introduction of a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper.

The addition reflects the growing academic and industry importance of robotics, intelligent automation and related engineering technologies.

Changes to GATE 2027 Syllabus

IIT Madras has also announced revisions to the syllabi of several GATE papers.

Changes have been made to the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper, while sectional paper codes have also been revised for:

  • Engineering Sciences
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Life Sciences

Candidates preparing for GATE 2027 should therefore use the latest official syllabus rather than relying entirely on previous-year preparation material.

Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?

GATE is open to eligible undergraduate students and degree holders from a wide range of academic backgrounds, subject to the official eligibility criteria.

Candidates should check the latest requirements related to:

  • Qualifying degree
  • Current year of study
  • Academic discipline
  • Eligible professional qualifications
  • Required supporting documents

Applicants planning to appear for two papers should also verify whether their desired combination is permitted.

Why GATE Scores Matter

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to eligible master's and doctoral programmes across participating institutions.

These include programmes in fields such as:

  • Engineering
  • Technology
  • Architecture
  • Science
  • Commerce
  • Arts
  • Humanities

Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes.

According to the official GATE information cited in the report, the GATE score remains valid for three years from the date the result is declared.

What Candidates Should Do Now

Candidates planning to appear for GATE 2027 should update their preparation and application calendars according to the revised schedule.

Applicants should:

  • Note the new August 27 registration date.
  • Prepare application documents in advance.
  • Check the latest syllabus for their paper.
  • Review permitted two-paper combinations.
  • Note the revised six-day examination schedule.
  • Avoid relying on older registration deadlines.
  • Monitor the official GATE portal for the admit-card announcement.

Students interested in the new Robotics and Automation paper should also review its syllabus and examination structure carefully before choosing it.
