Exam Overview
The Management Aptitude Test, or MAT, is a national management entrance examination conducted by the All India Management Association. It gives graduates from different academic backgrounds a route to apply to business schools that accept MAT for MBA and PGDM programmes. Because there are several testing cycles, students can plan an attempt around their preparation level and the deadlines of their target colleges.
The useful question is not simply whether a college accepts MAT. Applicants should also ask which programme accepts it, which score dates are valid, and what later selection stages are required. Examination registration and a business-school application are separate tasks. A score report may help a college assess an applicant, but it does not reserve a seat. This page covers the announced December 2026 cycle and gives practical guidance for students preparing for the 2027 admission season.
Exam Highlights
- Exam: MAT.
- Organiser: AIMA.
- Modes: PBT / CBT.
- Score validity: One year.
MAT is conducted by AIMA in multiple annual cycles, commonly February, May, September and December. The current official portal offers paper-based and computer-based tests. It is used for MBA and PGDM applications at participating business schools. The present format has five sections, with 150 questions in 120 minutes. The MAT score is valid for one year, subject to each college's admission rules.
Important Dates
- PBT registration / admit card: 14 / 17 December 2026.
- PBT test: 20 December 2026.
- CBT registration / admit card: 21 / 24 December 2026.
- CBT test: 27 December 2026.
- Expected result: First week of January 2027.
For December 2026, the paper-based registration deadline is 14 December, admit cards are scheduled for 17 December and the test for 20 December. The computer-based deadline is 21 December, with admit cards on 24 December and the test on 27 December. The official portal expects results in the first week of January 2027. Separate 2027 testing schedules should be checked when published. Match your chosen mode with its own dates; the PBT deadline and hall ticket do not apply automatically to CBT.
Eligibility Criteria
Basic examination eligibility
- Graduates: Applicants with a degree in any discipline may take MAT.
- Final-year students: Eligible students awaiting degree completion can also apply.
- Academic background: A management undergraduate degree is not generally required for the test.
Business-school requirements
- Minimum graduation marks: Each MBA or PGDM institution sets its own percentage or CGPA requirements.
- Degree completion: Final-year applicants must meet the college’s deadline for providing their result.
- Programme conditions: Check age, work experience or other criteria if a specialised programme prescribes them.
- Reservation: Applicable benefits and certificate rules are decided under the college’s admission policy.
Before applying to a college
Keep academic records and identity documents ready. Verify that the chosen course accepts your MAT cycle and that you meet its separate eligibility rules. A valid MAT score allows the college to assess your application; it does not by itself confirm admission or remove document-verification requirements.
Application Process
- Register from the official AIMA MAT portal using an email address and mobile number you can access throughout the admission season. Select the correct cycle and choose PBT, CBT or the permitted combination. Fill in your personal and academic details, upload the required photograph and signature, and review the information before making payment.
- Check any score-reporting or institution-preference options in the current form. Choose schools after confirming that they accept the selected MAT cycle for the course you want. Complete payment, verify that the registration is submitted and retain the confirmation and receipt.
- Later, log in to download the admit card for your chosen mode. A dual-mode applicant should track both test schedules independently. Apply directly to business schools where required; listing a school in an examination form should not be treated as completion of all of its admission formalities. Contact the official helpdesk if payment or submission status is unclear.
Application Fees
- PBT or CBT: ₹2,300.
- PBT + CBT: ₹4,000.
The current official MAT portal lists ₹2,300 for either PBT or CBT and ₹4,000 for the PBT+CBT combination. It does not publish a separate category-wise discount in this displayed schedule, so applicants should not assume one. Check the amount in the chosen cycle's official registration flow before paying. These are examination charges; college application, interview travel, seat acceptance and tuition costs are additional. Preserve the receipt and read the current refund conditions before making the payment.
Exam Pattern
- Questions / sections: 150 / 5.
- Duration: 120 minutes.
- Wrong response: −0.25 mark.
The current MAT structure has 150 questions over 120 minutes. There are five sections with 30 questions each: Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Economic and Business Environment. All five sections count towards the score in the format displayed on the current official portal. Incorrect responses attract negative marking of 0.25 mark.
PBT uses a paper-and-answer-sheet routine, while CBT requires students to navigate the computer interface. Choose practice that resembles the booked mode. The time available makes question selection and steady pacing important; spending too long on a single data set can reduce opportunities elsewhere.
Read the session instructions for the exact scoring and examination-day procedure. During mocks, practise both accuracy and a realistic attempt order. Do not use an older 200-question or 150-minute structure as the current pattern without checking the latest AIMA information.
Syllabus
Organise MAT preparation by the five current sections. Language Comprehension work should include understanding passages, identifying the central idea and practising vocabulary and grammar in context. For Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, use sets involving arguments, relationships, sequences and deduction, then explain the logic behind an answer rather than memorising a shortcut.
Mathematical Skills preparation can begin with percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, interest, time and work, number properties and basic algebra. Data Analysis and Sufficiency practice should train you to read tables and charts accurately and decide whether the available information is enough to answer a question.
For Economic and Business Environment, build familiarity with business developments, economic terms and relevant current events. Connect each topic to its meaning and context so that revision is more useful than collecting headlines.
These are practical preparation areas, not a claim that every listed topic must appear in a particular session. Use AIMA's current sample questions and instructions to judge question style. Keep a topic tracker, revise weak foundations and include mixed timed sets. Balanced practice across all five sections matters because the current format counts them all.
Admit Card
Download the MAT admit card through the official candidate account for the mode you booked. December 2026 releases are scheduled for 17 December for PBT and 24 December for CBT. Check the centre, reporting time, photograph and identification instructions immediately. Carry the required printed document and accepted original identity proof, plus any additional material directed by AIMA. Dual-mode candidates should download the correct admit card for each appointment. Plan the route in advance and follow the final card's permitted-item rules rather than an old checklist.
Result & Scorecard
The December 2026 MAT result is expected by the first week of January 2027 according to the official portal. Download the score report from the candidate login and keep a readable copy for college applications. Interpret the reported scores using AIMA's guidance rather than comparing them directly with raw marks from another entrance test. MAT scores are valid for one year, but a business school may accept only specified test cycles for its admission intake. Check both validity and the college's deadline. Result publication does not complete the college selection process.
Cutoff & Counselling
MAT does not run one central counselling process that all participating business schools follow. Each institution sets its own shortlist, score requirements, application dates and selection stages. A school may use an interview, group exercise, academic record or other criteria alongside the entrance score. Compare requirements programme by programme instead of looking for a single universal MAT cutoff.
When reading a historical cutoff, note its year, score measure and course. A percentile and a composite score are different values, and a previous threshold should not be presented as a guaranteed admission target. Shortlist a balanced set of schools whose eligibility and budget requirements you can meet.
Submit the college's own form where required, respond to shortlist messages and prepare your academic and identity documents. Read offer letters carefully for fee deadlines and refund conditions. Verify course recognition and the institution's official admission channel before making a seat payment. If using more than one MAT attempt, confirm how the school treats different score dates. Keep an application tracker until each selected institution has completed its admission decision.
Participating Colleges
Use AIMA's current participating-institute information to build an initial shortlist. The present portal lists schools such as BIMTECH Greater Noida, Christ University, VIT and other institutions, but acceptance can vary by programme. A college's name on a broad list should not be read as proof that every MBA or PGDM course there accepts MAT for your intended intake.
Check the college's official admission page for the exact course, accepted cycle, application deadline and available seats. Compare fees, location, curriculum, internships and published placement reporting carefully. Confirm the relevant programme recognition rather than relying only on a marketing label. Seat numbers and specialisations must be verified for the admission year before finalising an application.
Preparation Tips
- Begin with a short diagnostic test across all five sections and identify the topics that cost the most time. Keep daily practice small enough to review properly. Read comprehension passages, solve numerical sets and practise reasoning in a balanced schedule rather than working only on your favourite section.
- For data questions, write units and headings before calculating. Build a brief business-awareness notebook and revise it weekly. Use full mocks in your booked test mode, then review wrong answers, lucky guesses and skipped sets. Track whether an error came from a missing concept, misreading or poor pacing. Repeat weak question types before increasing the number of tests. In the final week, revise familiar methods and arrange your admit card, identity proof and travel plan.
FAQs
Q1. Who conducts MAT?
Answer: The All India Management Association conducts the Management Aptitude Test. Applicants should use its official portal for registration, session dates, admit cards and score-report information throughout the application cycle.
Q2. Can final-year students apply?
Answer: Yes, final-year degree students can take MAT under the applicable rules. A business school may still require proof of graduation and minimum marks before confirming admission to its programme.
Q3. What modes are currently offered?
Answer: The current official portal lists paper-based and computer-based testing. Check the particular cycle before booking, and practise the interface or answer-sheet routine that matches your selected mode.
Q4. How many questions are there?
Answer: The present format has 150 questions in five sections and a duration of 120 minutes. Use the latest AIMA structure when selecting mock tests, because older formats differ.
Q5. When are the December 2026 tests?
Answer: PBT is scheduled for 20 December and CBT for 27 December 2026. Registration and admit-card dates are different for the two modes, so track the booked appointment separately.
Q6. How long can I use a MAT score?
Answer: The score is valid for one year. Individual colleges may accept only certain test cycles for their intake, which makes their admission notice as important as the score's general validity.
Q7. Is there common MAT counselling?
Answer: No single process covers every participating school. Apply to the institutions you want, check their score requirements and complete their individual selection and document-verification steps.
