Exam Overview

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture, known as NATA, is conducted by the Council of Architecture. It assesses aptitude for the study of architecture and supports eligible applications to the five-year Bachelor of Architecture programme. The test considers visual understanding, design sensitivity, reasoning and related abilities, while admission authorities and institutions handle their own seat-allocation procedures.

For a student, architecture preparation should include both creative work and careful academic planning. Passing an aptitude requirement does not remove the school-subject and aggregate-mark conditions for admission. It also does not create a single common counselling process for every architecture college. This guide is intended for 2027 planning and uses the updated 2026 brochure as a clearly labelled reference where a new 2027 rule is unavailable. Students should confirm the next cycle's dates, attempts and score-use conditions before applying. Build a shortlist of approved architecture programmes and check the admission route for each.

Exam Highlights

  • Conducting body: The Council of Architecture conducts the aptitude test.
  • Admission route: Eligible applicants use it for specified five-year B.Arch. programmes.
  • Latest format: The reference combines drawing and computer-based aptitude components.

NATA is the Council of Architecture's aptitude test for eligible B.Arch. admission routes. The latest 2026 structure combined an offline Drawing and Composition component with a computer-based adaptive component. The reference paper carried 200 marks over three hours. The 2026 attempt rules differed between phases, so students should not assume an unlimited number of tests. The new 2027 brochure must confirm the final schedule and arrangements.

Important Dates

  • 2027 schedule: Registration, tests and appointment-card dates are to be announced.
  • 2026 historical Phase 1: Tests ran from 4 April to 13 June 2026.
  • 2026 historical Phase 2: Tests were scheduled for 7–8 August 2026.

The NATA 2027 registration, appointment-card, test and scorecard schedules have not been verified in an official new-cycle notice. Keep them as to be announced. For context, NATA 2026 Phase 1 ran from 4 April to 13 June on designated test days, while Phase 2 was scheduled for 7–8 August. These completed-cycle dates are not a 2027 forecast. When the next schedule is released, check slot-booking deadlines, phase eligibility and result timing alongside the general registration window.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualification requirements

  • The updated 2026 brochure allowed candidates who had passed or were appearing in the specified 10+2 route, or the 10+3 diploma route with Mathematics, to take NATA.
  • Final B.Arch. admission required a completed qualifying examination and the prescribed aggregate marks.
  • Confirm the corresponding 2027 conditions when the Council publishes the next brochure.

Programme and category conditions

  • For the latest B.Arch. admission reference, 10+2 applicants needed Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, together with one of the permitted additional subjects.
  • The list included Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies.
  • The aggregate requirement was at least 45%.
  • The alternative route was a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics and at least 45% aggregate.

Documents and admission checks

  • Reservation is handled under the applicable state or admission-authority rules rather than a universal NATA admission concession.
  • Check age or other conditions in the target institution's prospectus instead of guessing them.
  • Keep academic, identity and relevant category documents ready.
  • Examination registration and an aptitude score alone do not confirm that a student meets every college's admission conditions.

Application Process

  1. Start from the official NATA portal when the 2027 application process opens. Read the new brochure, especially the qualification and attempt rules, before selecting a test phase or slot. Register with active contact details and complete personal and academic information carefully.
  2. Upload the required photograph, signature and supporting documents in the prescribed format. Review the form against your original records, then pay the applicable fee and save the confirmation. A confirmation page establishes registration status, but the appointment card is needed for the actual test as directed.
  3. Choose or confirm the city, date and session through the permitted booking procedure. If an additional attempt is allowed, follow the current process rather than creating a duplicate account. Keep appointment and result documents organised by attempt. Apply separately to the relevant state admission system or architecture institution, because a NATA registration does not itself submit every B.Arch. college application.

Application Fees

  • 2027 amount: The new brochure will confirm charges.
  • 2026 General / OBC-NCL reference: ₹1,750 per test at Indian centres.
  • 2026 SC / ST / EWS / PwD reference: ₹1,250 per test at Indian centres.
  • 2026 transgender reference: ₹1,000 per test at Indian centres.

NATA 2027 charges await the new brochure. The updated 2026 per-test reference was ₹1,750 for General/OBC-NCL candidates, ₹1,250 for SC/ST/EWS/PwD candidates and ₹1,000 for transgender candidates at Indian centres. The outside-India reference was ₹15,000 per test. These are previous-cycle figures for budgeting, not confirmed 2027 payments. Check any permitted additional attempt and its cost in the new rules. College applications, counselling and tuition remain separate, and the reference brochure describes examination fees as non-refundable.

Exam Pattern

  • Reference cycle: The updated 2026 format is shown pending 2027 confirmation.
  • Drawing and Composition: Three tasks carry 80 marks over 90 minutes.
  • Computer-based component: 50 questions carry 120 marks over 90 minutes.

The updated NATA 2026 reference had two components totalling 200 marks. Part A was an offline Drawing and Composition test of 90 minutes and 80 marks, with three tasks. Part B was a 90-minute computer-based adaptive test carrying 120 marks, with 42 multiple-choice and eight non-MCQ questions. The next 2027 brochure must confirm whether this structure continues.

Drawing work included colour composition, black-and-white sketching and three-dimensional composition. The computer component assessed aptitude through its published question formats. Practise both modes rather than preparing only for an objective test.

Check the current instructions for task materials, adaptive-test navigation and how responses are scored. Do not apply another entrance test's negative-marking rule to NATA without verification. Use timed drawing sessions and computer practice to understand pacing. The final appointment card and Council notices determine the test-day materials, reporting requirements and approved arrangements for the selected appointment.

Syllabus

Drawing and Composition preparation should develop observation, scale, proportion, shade, colour and the arrangement of elements. Practise depicting simple objects, buildings and everyday spaces clearly. Three-dimensional exercises should help you visualise how shapes relate rather than only reproduce an attractive picture.

Aptitude practice should cover visual and spatial reasoning, interpretation of information, logical thinking and design sensitivity under the official scope. Observe how people use a space and explain why an arrangement works or fails. This makes design preparation more useful than memorising isolated building images.

Revise the prescribed numerical and language areas, including basic mathematical reasoning and the interpretation of words or instructions. Architecture and design awareness can be developed by studying important buildings, materials and relevant developments with their context.

These directions are based on the latest available brochure. The 2027 syllabus must be checked for exact coverage and any change in testing format. Keep a portfolio of practice exercises for your own review, record feedback and repeat weak skills under time limits. Combine creative practice with clear reasoning, because a polished drawing alone does not cover every assessed aptitude area.

Admit Card

NATA uses an appointment card for the allotted test, and the 2027 release process is awaiting the new schedule. Download the current card from the candidate portal after the required booking steps. Verify the centre, date, session, photograph and identification instructions. Carry the required hard copy and original accepted photo identity proof. Bring drawing materials only as specified in the final rules. Keep a separate card for each permitted appointment. A payment receipt or registration confirmation is not a replacement for the examination appointment document.

Result & Scorecard

NATA results and scorecards are made available through the official portal. The updated 2026 system distinguished raw scores and, for Phase 1, a final percentile score based on the prescribed method. The brochure states validity for the 2026–27 academic session, so students should not assume a fixed multi-year rule for every new cycle. The 2027 result and score-use conditions need its own notification. Save the relevant report and confirm how the admission authority uses it. A valid score still needs to be combined with academic eligibility and an admission application.

Cutoff & Counselling

An aptitude-qualification rule and a college's admission cutoff are separate. The updated 2026 NATA brochure did not prescribe a minimum raw score for qualification under its revised system; it explained the scorecard and non-zero-percentile conditions. Applicants should not reuse an older fixed qualifying-mark claim as the 2027 rule. Read the next brochure for the applicable qualification method.

B.Arch. admission is processed by the relevant state or institution, rather than one NATA counselling form covering every college. Authorities can use the score and academic records under their own merit rules. Verify the accepted test route, score year and eligibility before submitting preferences.

Keep marksheets, appointment card, scorecard, identity proof and applicable category documents ready. Register separately for the admission process, respond to verification queries and read fee and reporting deadlines. Check programme approval, current intake and the complete cost before choosing a college. Historical cutoffs should be labelled by year and category. Continue tracking rounds until the allotted institution confirms that all academic, payment and reporting requirements have been completed.

Participating Colleges

NATA supports applications to architecture institutions that accept it under the Council's academic and admission framework. Use the Council of Architecture's approved-institution information and each college's prospectus to verify the programme and intake. Universities and state admission systems can publish separate lists of participating B.Arch. colleges.

A recognised architecture degree, suitable curriculum and studio facilities deserve careful comparison alongside location, fees and accommodation. Confirm whether the selected college accepts NATA, another approved test route or a specified merit combination for the intended year. Do not describe every prominent architecture school as a NATA participant without checking its actual process. Seat totals and course availability must be verified in the current admission notice.

Preparation Tips

  1. Develop a regular drawing routine around observation, proportion and composition. Start with simple objects and spaces, then practise timed tasks with the materials permitted in the latest instructions. Review whether the work communicates the intended scene clearly rather than focusing only on decoration.
  2. Build spatial reasoning through shape and perspective exercises. Read short design and architecture material, and explain the function of a building or arrangement in your own words. Revise basic numerical and language skills alongside creative practice. Use mocks that reflect both test components and analyse weak areas after each attempt. In the final phase, rehearse the appointment-day materials, arrange identity documents and check the centre and session shown on the card.
