Exam Overview
The Xavier Aptitude Test, or XAT, is a national management entrance examination conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of XAMI members. It is used for MBA and PGDM applications at XLRI and other accepting business schools. Alongside verbal and quantitative work, its Decision Making area asks students to evaluate situations and choose a reasoned response.
For the 2027 intake, students should treat examination preparation and school applications as linked but separate tasks. A XAT registration does not automatically establish eligibility for every XLRI programme or accepting institution. Course requirements, application choices and later selection stages still matter. Begin with a shortlist of programmes, check the qualification and deadline for each, and then organise preparation around the published paper format. This guide covers the announced XAT 2027 cycle and highlights tentative dates separately. It also explains how to manage documents, score reports and admission decisions without assuming that an entrance result guarantees a seat.
Exam Highlights
- Conducting body: XLRI Jamshedpur conducts XAT on behalf of XAMI members.
- Mode: Applicants take a computer-based management test.
- Academic route: The score supports eligible MBA and PGDM applications.
XAT 2027 is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for the national management-admission cycle. The examination is computer based and scheduled for 3 January 2027. The current official overview expects about 95 questions across verbal/reasoning, decision making, quantitative/data interpretation and general knowledge areas, with a total duration of three hours. Students should apply separately to the programmes and institutions they want, following each school's admission rules.

Registration opened on 15 July 2026 and the official closing date is 6 December 2026. Admit-card downloads are tentatively scheduled from 20 December 2026. The announced test date is 3 January 2027, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The official FAQ expects results approximately three weeks after the examination rather than giving a fixed result date. An application-edit window has been announced for 16–17 October 2026 for eligible submitted applications. Check current notices for permitted changes and any later schedule revision.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualification requirements
- The official XAT 2027 FAQ requires a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years, or an equivalent qualification, in any discipline.
- Candidates appearing for their final examinations by 11 June 2027 may also apply under the published conditions.
- A management undergraduate qualification is not the only permitted academic background.
Programme and category conditions
- The basic XAT qualification should be separated from a programme's admission criteria.
- Different schools and specialised courses can set additional degree, mark or work-experience requirements.
- The basic FAQ does not supply one category-wise graduation percentage for every accepting programme, so students should not assume that a generic minimum covers all institutions.
Documents and admission checks
- Final-year applicants should enter the aggregate marks available up to the latest completed semester or year as directed.
- Keep academic records and qualification evidence ready for verification.
- For work-experience entries, use the official definitions and supporting documents rather than counting every internship as full-time employment.
- Nationality-based alternative test routes and programme conditions should be checked in the current official guidance.
- Registering for the examination does not by itself complete an XLRI or other business-school application.
Application Process
- Begin from the official XAT website and register with an email address and mobile number that you will keep active. Verify the contact details before submitting them; the website notes that these cannot be changed after registration. Complete the application with accurate personal, academic and supported work-experience information.
- Select XLRI programmes if you intend to apply to them, choose available examination-city preferences and upload the required photograph and signature. Preview the form against your original documents before final submission and payment. Save the application copy and receipt.
- Use the candidate dashboard to monitor notices, permitted corrections and admit-card availability. The October edit window applies only as specified by its notification. Other accepting business schools may require separate applications and fees, so track them independently. If payment or submission is unclear, raise a query through the official dashboard with the relevant evidence. Do not rely on account creation alone as proof of a completed application.
Application Fees
- Base examination fee: XAT 2027 registration costs ₹2,300.
- XLRI programme choice: Add ₹200 for each selected programme.
The official XAT 2027 registration page lists a base examination fee of ₹2,300. Applicants selecting XLRI programmes pay an additional ₹200 for each programme. The displayed XAT fee does not give a separate category-wise concession, so students should check the official payment flow rather than assume one. Alternative GMAT/GRE programme routes have different charges and conditions. Save the receipt, verify the total before payment and budget separately for other college forms, interviews, acceptance payments and tuition.
Exam Pattern
- Questions and duration: About 95 questions are expected over 180 minutes.
- General Knowledge: It is excluded from overall percentile, with no negative marking.
- Final instructions: Check timing, navigation and penalties in the official mock and admit card.
The official XAT 2027 overview expects about 95 questions over 180 minutes. Its approximate distribution is 26 in Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, 21 in Decision Making, 28 in Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation, and 20 in General Knowledge. The main aptitude block and General Knowledge timing should be checked against the final test instructions.
The published scheme awards one mark for a correct response and deducts 0.25 for an incorrect aptitude response. It also describes a 0.1-mark penalty for skipped questions beyond eight. General Knowledge has no negative marking and does not contribute to the overall percentile or cutoff score, although XLRI can use it during selection.
Practise the computer interface and a deliberate attempt strategy. Read the current mock instructions for navigation, timing and penalty application instead of importing another management test's rules. The listed question distribution is approximate, so preparation should develop flexible skills rather than depend on an identical count.
Syllabus
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning preparation should include passage comprehension, critical reasoning, vocabulary in context and the interpretation of arguments. Practise reading different styles of text and explain the evidence behind an answer. Review paragraph organisation and language exercises using the official question style as guidance.
Decision Making requires careful evaluation of a situation, stakeholders and the options available. Use practice cases to identify the actual problem, consider consequences and reject choices based on unsupported assumptions. A useful review exercise is to explain why an attractive alternative does not address the stated situation responsibly.
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation work can cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry, measurement and other prescribed mathematical ideas. Practise extracting relevant information from data sets before calculating. General Knowledge preparation should combine important current events with relevant background knowledge.
Use the current XAT overview and official previous papers to judge scope and style. Keep a topic checklist, but avoid treating a coaching list as a promise of particular questions. Review weak concepts and case-reading errors regularly. Preparation for other management tests can support some areas, while dedicated Decision Making practice helps address XAT's distinctive format.
Admit Card
The official XAT 2027 schedule gives 20 December 2026 as the tentative admit-card download start. Use the candidate login when the release is activated and check the centre, reporting time, photograph and identification rules. Carry the required printed card and accepted original photo identity proof, along with any material specifically listed in the final instructions. The test is scheduled for 3 January from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Verify the final appointment and travel route rather than relying only on the broad website schedule.
Result & Scorecard
The official FAQ expects XAT 2027 results approximately three weeks after the examination. This is an expected period rather than a confirmed calendar date. Download the scorecard from the official account and check the sectional and overall information reported. Understand which components contribute to percentile before comparing scores. XAT 2027 is relevant to its corresponding admission cycle, and institutions decide their accepted score and selection rules. Save the report and follow school-specific shortlist notices. A scorecard is not an admission letter, so complete the remaining applications and verification stages.
Cutoff & Counselling
XAT does not have one central counselling process that all accepting institutions follow. Each business school sets its own shortlist criteria and selection procedure. Overall or sectional score requirements can differ by programme and applicant group, and a published minimum does not mean every candidate above it receives an offer.
Read the current policy for the exact course you want. Use historical cutoffs only when the year, score measure and programme are clearly identified. Apply to other schools separately where required, rather than assuming that the XAT form includes all of their admission steps.
After a shortlist, prepare for the interviews or other assessments stated by the institution. Keep degree records, identity proof and supported experience documents ready. Final-year students must meet qualification-completion conditions. Monitor offers, waitlists and fee deadlines, and read withdrawal or refund rules before accepting a place. General Knowledge may be used by XLRI during selection even though it is excluded from the overall percentile. Continue tracking the institution's portal until verification, payment and reporting formalities are completed.
Participating Colleges
XLRI is the principal institution associated with XAT, and the official website also lists XAMI members and associate business schools. Examples shown include XIM University, XIME and LIBA, alongside other accepting institutions. Programme acceptance and campus options should always be verified in the school's current prospectus.
Compare the course structure, recognition, eligibility, fees, location and available seats for the intended intake. A school may accept XAT for one programme but use different conditions elsewhere. Check whether a separate form is required and whether its deadline falls before the result. Seat information must come from the current institution notice; a broad list of accepting schools does not confirm admission availability or a guaranteed place.
Preparation Tips
- Balance verbal reading, quantitative revision and Decision Making practice in a weekly plan. Begin with a diagnostic paper, then target the habits that reduce accuracy: rushed reading, unsupported assumptions and lengthy calculations on an unsuitable question.
- Review each Decision Making case by identifying the central problem and explaining the consequences of the chosen option. For data questions, check units and what the set actually asks before calculating. Use full mocks in the published format, then analyse wrong answers, guesses and skipped questions in light of the penalty rules. Build a brief current-affairs notebook and revise it regularly. In the final phase, rehearse the interface and document routine, and keep business-school application deadlines visible beside the study timetable.
