Exam Overview

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, evaluates understanding of subjects studied at undergraduate level and supports applications to selected postgraduate and research programmes. IISc and the IITs conduct it jointly on behalf of the national coordinating body. IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027. Different papers serve different academic backgrounds, so choosing a paper should begin with the courses a student wants to pursue.

A GATE score can be relevant to higher study, financial assistance under applicable rules and some public-sector recruitment processes. These are separate opportunities with their own applications and eligibility checks. Passing the examination does not automatically award admission, funding or a job. Students should therefore prepare a course shortlist alongside their examination plan. This guide explains the 2027 schedule and the main steps, while reminding applicants to use the selected institute's prospectus for final admission decisions.

Exam Highlights

  • Exam: GATE 2027.
  • Organiser: IIT Madras.

Eligibility Criteria

Who can apply?

  • Academic stage: Students in the third or a higher year of an eligible undergraduate programme, or candidates who have completed a qualifying degree.
  • Eligible fields: Engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts and humanities under the official degree table.
  • Other qualifications: Integrated degrees, medical qualifications and recognised professional-society routes must meet the organiser’s specific conditions.

Check your target programme

  • Degree and paper combination: A college may accept only specified qualifying degrees and GATE paper codes for a course.
  • Minimum academic marks: Institutes set their own admission percentage or CGPA requirements; these are separate from permission to sit GATE.
  • Documents: Keep enrolment or degree-completion evidence, identity proof and applicable category documents ready.
  • Foreign qualifications: Read the relevant conditions in the official 2027 eligibility guidance before applying.

Examination eligibility does not guarantee admission. Check each selected programme’s prospectus and any additional test, interview or verification requirements.

Application Process

  1. Apply through the GOAPS link published on the official GATE 2027 website. Read the current registration instructions before creating the account, particularly the DigiLocker requirements for this cycle. Enter personal and academic details, choose the paper or permitted paper combination, and select examination-city preferences.
  2. Upload the required photograph, signature and supporting documents in the prescribed sizes and formats. Check your name against the identity document you intend to carry. Pay the applicable fee, verify the submission status and save a copy of the application and transaction record.
  3. Monitor the application for scrutiny queries and respond within the stated time. Preserve the DigiLocker account used for submission as directed by the organiser. A second paper should be added through the permitted process rather than by creating another application. Use a correction window only for changes it specifically allows and budget for additional charges where applicable.

Application Fees

  • Female / SC / ST / PwD: regular: One paper ₹1,000; two ₹2,000.
  • Others: regular: One paper ₹2,000; two ₹4,000.
  • Female / SC / ST / PwD: extended: One paper ₹1,500; two ₹2,500.
  • Others: extended: One paper ₹2,500; two ₹4,500.

GATE 2027 regular fees are ₹1,000 for one paper or ₹2,000 for two papers for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates. For other applicants, including foreign nationals, they are ₹2,000 and ₹4,000 respectively. During the extended period, these amounts become ₹1,500/₹2,500 for the first group and ₹2,500/₹4,500 for the second. Pay only through the official application flow. Examination fees are separate from postgraduate application charges and any later seat-acceptance payment.

Exam Pattern

  • Questions / marks: 65 / 100.
  • Duration: 3 hours.
  • Types: MCQ / MSQ / NAT.

A GATE 2027 paper contains 65 questions: ten in General Aptitude and 55 in the selected subject component. The paper carries 100 marks and lasts three hours. Question types include multiple-choice questions, multiple-select questions and numerical-answer questions. Questions carry one or two marks.

For an incorrect multiple-choice answer, the deduction is one-third of a mark on a one-mark question and two-thirds on a two-mark question. Multiple-select and numerical-answer questions do not have negative marking, and multiple-select questions do not receive partial credit. General Aptitude contributes 15 marks; the remaining distribution depends on the paper.

Learn how to use the computer interface, navigate between questions and enter numerical answers accurately. Do not apply the mathematics or optional-section structure of one branch to every paper. Check the official pattern for your paper code and any approved accessibility arrangements before selecting mock tests.

Syllabus

Start with the 2027 syllabus for the exact paper code selected in your application. The organiser has announced revisions, so an old coaching checklist may miss changes. General Aptitude is common across papers and covers language and reasoning skills together with quantitative and spatial aptitude. Give this component a regular place in your timetable instead of leaving it for the final week.

The subject syllabus differs substantially between engineering, science and humanities papers. A computer-science applicant should work from the CS document; an electronics applicant should use EC; a civil-engineering applicant should use CE. Candidates for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence or the new Robotics and Automation paper need the relevant dedicated documents. The sectional arrangements for XE, XH and XL also require careful reading.

Convert your syllabus into a topic checklist with three columns: concept revision, solved practice and timed practice. Mark omissions before choosing study material. After a chapter, explain the core idea in your own words and solve questions that require applying it in unfamiliar settings. Keep formula notes concise and attach the assumptions under which each formula works. The official subject PDF remains the authority for complete topic coverage.

Admit Card

Download the GATE 2027 admit card from the official candidate portal when the organiser activates it. The reviewed schedule marks the download date as to be announced and separately gives 4 January 2027 for city information. Check the paper code, date, session, centre and identification requirements. Carry the required printed admit card and accepted original photo identity document. Review accessibility instructions if relevant. Save the PDF and plan travel after checking the final centre; a city-allotment notice is not the examination admit card.

Result & Scorecard

GATE 2027 results are scheduled for 19 March 2027, subject to changes announced by the organiser. Check the candidate portal for the result and scorecard download instructions. Understand the distinction between marks, the GATE score and rank before comparing admission options. A score is valid for three years from the announcement of results, but each institution decides the score years it will accept for a particular application. Preserve the scorecard and application details. Apply separately for admissions or recruitment; the organiser does not allot every postgraduate seat through the result portal.

Cutoff & Counselling

The qualifying cutoff and an institute's admission cutoff answer different questions. The first indicates qualification in the selected paper and category; the second reflects competition for a particular course and seat group. A qualifying score may therefore be insufficient for a preferred department. Historical cutoffs are useful context, but should always be identified by year, programme and category.

There is no single GATE counselling form covering all institutions. For IIT applications, students normally apply to the institutes separately and follow COAP where relevant to view and respond to offers. NIT and other participating postgraduate admissions may use CCMT. Confirm the current year's procedure before registering, because programmes and participating institutions can change.

Check which GATE paper your target course accepts, its degree requirements and whether a test or interview is involved. Keep degree records, scorecard, identity proof and category certificates ready. Read offer-response and payment deadlines carefully. Scholarships and assistantships follow their own conditions, so a college offer should not be presented as an automatic funding award. Track every application until its admission formalities are complete.

Participating Colleges

GATE scores are used by many departments at IITs, IISc and institutions participating in postgraduate admission systems such as CCMT. Acceptance depends on the programme and paper, so a broad institute name is only the beginning of a shortlist. An M.Tech. course in one department may accept a different set of papers and degrees from another course at the same institution.

Compare curriculum, laboratories, research interests, fees and the current seat matrix. For a research route, read the department's selection notice and potential supervisor information. Use the institute's official admission prospectus to confirm intake and score-year acceptance. Avoid treating an old list of institutions or a total seat count as an assured 2027 admission opportunity.

Preparation Tips

  1. Choose a manageable set of resources and begin with the revised official syllabus. Build concepts before relying on shortcuts. Solve previous questions by topic, then return to them in timed mixed sets so you practise choosing a method independently.
  2. Make an error notebook that separates conceptual gaps, algebra mistakes and interface-entry errors. Review it weekly. Take full mocks using the correct paper structure and spend enough time analysing skipped and incorrect questions. For numerical questions, practise units, signs and rounding; for multiple-select questions, evaluate each option independently. Keep General Aptitude practice consistent. In the final phase, revise formulas with their conditions, reduce unnecessary resource switching and rehearse the examination-day document checklist and travel plan.
